Hinesville hosts lunchtime concert

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) - Downtown Hinesville was one of the hottest places to be Friday afternoon and it had nothing to do with the temperature.

The Hinesville Arts Council, the Downtown Development Authority and others hosted their monthly lunchtime concert in the park. The Ben Robinson Band entertained folks who found a bench or table to get out of their offices and enjoy their day.

"We're trying to bring families downtown, businesses downtown, we just want to keep it all in downtown," said Jessica Sanchez of the Downtown Development Authority.

Robinson is originally from coastal Georgia and has played with ZZ Top and on Late Night with David Letterman.

This marked the third event in the lunchtime concert series, which takes place from 11:30am to 1:30pm on the third Friday of each month.

A harrowing picture of Pop King Michael Jackson—bald, bruised, broken ribs, stomach without food and having undigested tablets-has come out from his autopsy report.
According to sources, Michael Jackson’s body had become a skeleton as he ate only one time in twenty- four hours. At the time of death he weighed only 50 kg, which was too low for a man of five feet ten inches height. His hips, thighs and shoulders were riddled with needle marks, showing the signs of injections that he took to lessen pain. He was bald and wearing a wig to hide it. Even his ribs were broken, perhaps the result of frantic pumping to revive him. Finally, there were four needle wounds near Michael’s heart; perhaps they were from failed attempts to restart his heart by injecting adrenaline into it directly.

Michael Jackson’s face was in even more bad condition and looked like a mass of scars from his thirteen cosmetic operations, which he had undergone to enhance his looks. Even the bridge of Jackson’s nose had disappeared, with the right side of it a little bit caving in.

The skin above Michael Jackson’s left ear was completely bald and looked scarred. However, it is said to be the result of an accident that he had in year 1984, while shooting for an advertisement for the soft drink giant Pepsi.

In the meantime, LA Superior Court has allowed Michael Jackson’s mother to take the custody of his children—Prince Michele, 12, Paris, 11 and Prince Michael II, 7. However, the court did not agree to her request to become the temporary guardian of children’s estate.

The family of the Pop Icon is preparing for his last rites, which might be even bigger than that of Princess Diana, which had been attended by 250,000 people in London and watched by around 2.5 billion people all over the world. Sources say that the Jackson family is planning to bury the Pop King at his fantasy themed abode, Neverland.

In another revelation, Michael Jackson’s ex- wife has said that Pop King was not the real father of her son Prince. In fact, she had gone for artificial insemination from an anonymous donor and the children were handed over to Jackson in a deal worth millions of dollars.

Jacksonville, Fla.'s Ben Robinson has been stoking fires as a blues guitarist since his tweens, dropping jaws at open mike nights and basking in many a spotlight from an early age.

Now 22, Robinson's playing has earned raves from pros and the industry's for a decade, from the likes of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons to David Letterman's orchestra leader Paul Shaffer. David Letterman you say? Oh yes, Robinson was showing the world his virtuosity on The Late Show when he was only 12.

As you check out tracks with face-melting solos, like "Armageddon Express," or smooth blues solemnity, like "Heart of Stone," on www. myspace. com/thebenrobinsonband, it's clear the man's early success has turned into a potent, wholly enjoyable sound years later, on his self-titled album.

Ben took a break from making his Laguna guitars cry uncle to fill in The Village Idiot about his latest songs, how he got to this point and also about something he might just add to his live act.

VI: How long have you been performing, not just professionally?

Robinson: My first actual live performance was when I was 10. The first legitimate one was at a place called Rafters, in Saint Simon's Island, Ga., for an open mike night. (It was the) first time I'd ever played in front of anybody besides my parents. Everybody kind of looked around like, 'why's this kid here.' I played, and they asked me to come back every time they had a jam night, which was a lot of fun.

VI: How does it feel recording your first "adult" album after playing professionally for so long?

Robinson: I really didn't know what to expect. When we started writing, nobody knew what to expect, so it was a really cool experience recording this album, because of how free flowing everything was. Everything you hear on the (record) is what we did. It's really cool recording this record, just because of the free flowing, 'let's see what happens' kind of mentality that went along with it.

VI: What was the inspiration behind the song "Heart of Stone?"

Robinson: It was actually a collaborative effort, each person had a part in writing that song. They took an experience (they had) from their life, within that certain context of "Heart of Stone." ... My personal experience on it, I felt a need for a great song that was honest, the lyric of "heart of stone" is a very straight, honest written lyric, about a guy who screws up and realizes it. ... It was a girl, there was a girl, and that's all I think needs to be said about it.

VI: You've been able to do things musically that others didn't when you were younger.
How do you think back on those experiences now that you're pushing forward and trying to make a buck as a blues performer?

Robinson: All that cool stuff, it's a great learning experience. It's a great personality builder, it really helped me to (prepare) at such a young age. Paul Shaffer, he's a killer player. To have you on at 12 years old, for lack of a better term, it's like being thrown into the fire, because it can change at any point. That cool stuff I was able to do when I was younger, it wasn't all quite highlights, it really helped mold me as the performer that I am today. It was definitely a big booster. If I tried to get into it at this point, it would be a totally different deal.

VI: What's been something crazy that's happened out in the road in the past year, or more recently?

Robinson: This was really cool. We were in Daytona Beach, towards the beginning of last year. Me and my band, the band playing with for that night, we go and we check out the club, gearing up to play that night. We go to get something to eat right around the corner where we're playing. There was all these people at the club (when we got back), when we walked in the door, they went crazy. I hadn't been to Daytona Beach, I didn't know any of these people. This was about the hour before the show started, spent that time going around talking to everyone. That set the precedent for a good show. It was a really fun experience. To have people just appreciate what you're getting ready to do, that was great.

VI: Apparently, you're not the only Ben Robinson to appear on David Letterman. You're a hell of a guitar player, but this other Ben Robinson apparently caught a bullet between his teeth like, five times, and even wrote a book about how to do it.
Can you top that?

Robinson: I've never actually met him before, but I've seen him on You Tube and stuff. Aaah, let me think about this. As far as playing live, I think the only thing I could do that would top that, I can play my guitar and my rhythm guitar player's guitar at the same time. I could play a whole song like that. The other guitar player will come and stand right next to me, still have his guitar strapped on. I'll play the rhythm, just fret it on his guitar. And then with my left hand, I'll tap the leads with the melody part. ... But that's not quite catching a bullet in my teeth. Maybe I should buy his book and learn how to do that. That would be great to add to the show.

Longtime Temecula residents may remember Ben Robinson. He was the 10-year-old guitar shredder in a band full of grown-ups who could barely keep up with him.

He drew national attention from 1998 to 2000, when he appeared on numerous television shows including “Late Night with David Letterman” and then began making music regularly for Nickelodeon.

He played with such guitar legends as Guitar Shorty and such rock giants as Warrant. Then, as he entered his teen years he almost disappeared from public sight.

Now he is 22 years old and releasing the first album of his adult career.

His album, aptly titled “The Ben Robinson Band,” is a world apart from the music of his child prodigy years.

The album is calmer and more varied than his previous self-produced album, titled “I Told You So,” which he recorded in 1999 when he was 12 years old.

“I Told You So” featured only cover tracks of famed blues musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn. Robinson’s new album, however, will feature original songs exclusively.

“We had no idea it would come out like this. We had no clue,” Robinson said of the new direction his music has taken.

The direction change is natural, he said, because his musical tastes are more varied. “My iPod has a lot more on it than Stevie Ray Vaughan,” he said.

Robinson likes the new direction, he said, because it allows him more ways in which he can express himself.

“I really, not only got out of the blues, but started hearing myself in a whole new category,” he said. “I like the direction it’s going in. Blues is an expressive style but you can only express so much.”

The guitars on the new album play a subdued backup role to his vocals, which is a bold step for a person known for his high-flying fret board gymnastics.

Each song on the new album conveys a unique interpretation on numerous styles.

With the gospel-esque choir and slowly arpeggiated chords, “Blue Sky” could have come right from a Pink Floyd album were it not for Robinson’s gravely vocals.

The straightforward instrumentation coupled with Bon Jovi-styled vocal harmonies on “Everything I’ll Ever Need” conjures images of a hundred ex-hair metal bands who, in the ’90s, were finally starting to calm down.

Muting the guitar’s part in the album was a side effect of emphasizing his vocal’s role in the songs, he said.

“[The guitars] weren’t intentionally subdued but that’s just the way it came out,” he said. “Vocal’s the most important part of the songs… The way I sing the songs sets the tone of the song.”

He pointed to “Armageddon Express” as proof he has no plans of burying his guitar anytime soon.

The song is a ZZ Top-style blues rock assault with all the over-the-top guitar stunts for which Robinson is known. “It’s the one big guitar song on the record,” he said.

Last December, when he had just begun recording the album, he said he hoped the album would help him form a new image as an adult performer.

“To sell out shows now, it’s not about crazy guitar solos being played by an 11-year-old kid,” he said. “It’s a lot more work now. In SoCal there’s 2,500 guitar players doing what I do. The hardest part’s defining myself from the others.”

After the Oct. 15 album release, Robinson will leave on a nationwide tour to give clinics at Guitar Center stores. His record label, 633 Music Group, is currently planning a nationwide tour of live performances, said Monte Willis, the label’s co-executive.

Guitar Hero!

Recently John Mayer complained about Guitar Hero, stating in part that everyone should learn to play a real guitar and not pretend because in his words, "Nothing can come close to the feeling of playing a real guitar for a crowd".

When asked how he feels about the super hot game, Ben had this to say, "Are you kidding, the game rocks and the people who are great at it blow my mind, I have tried it, and it is tough. And being real about it, I wish EVERYONE could feel what I feel, but chances are most will not get to play at my level or the level that John has reached, so if they can even get close through playing Hero, I say more power to them, rock on". Ben adds, "It is my guess that quite a few people are going to be inspired to learn how to play a real instrument, and play well, I have no doubt about that"!

Ben Robinson had his brush with stardom when he was only 12. He was on national TV just about every week as part of the Nickelodeon network's house band. He was playing in concerts as hotshot young guitar player, another blues prodigy.

Look on YouTube, and you can see him playing the Apollo Theatre when he was 16.Eventually, that came to an end, and he took a break from it all.

Now he's getting close again, and he's still only 22.He's one of 10 finalists for Guitar Player magazine's Guitar Superstar contest. Next week, he will fly to San Francisco to perform in front of the crowd and judges Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Elliot Easton, pretty decent players in their own rights.

With producer David Z and Bruce McCabe, (the hit writer of Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Sheppards hits) in the house you know Ben just absolutely rocked. Aerosmith meets Clapton with Albert King alive and in one Ben Robinson is how one person described the event.

It was the first time in 8 years that Ben and Tony Tyler had played together and I can tell you, it was like they had been on the road together all these years, just hot. Tony had a new super bass player in his band when Ben jumped up to join him on Whipping post, sweet! Who knew?

Then Tony T. did a set that had the crowd going nuts, they look forward to hitting the road very soon.

The Bank and Blues was loaded with talent, just over the top. you should join Jeff Feadora and the gang there when you are in town!

Ben and Bruce McCabe are writing as I speak. Robert Willis will also be doing writing sessions with Ben, it was Robert who discovered Ben at a small club in Brunswick Georgia. Robert has worked with Greg Allman and Ric Wake among others.

Well, we got hold of music from way back when Ben and Tony were just we think 14. They had a weekend of fun, this was during the Nickelodeon time period.

We know where Ben is now, one of the best young players in the universe!

The University of Geogia Music Business Program will be promoting Ben.

Bruce Burch, the program's Administrative Director had this to say:

As a class project project we are going to promote Ben Robinson both on the web and in ground floor grass roots promotion. Our class will be working Face Book, Myspace, and blogging about Ben, on the ground they will placing posters, giving out flyers, calling radio, and any other aspect of promoting an artist. The promotion will culminate in a concert by Ben and the band. When Ben was just 16 years old he was invited to play the Apollo, most know this can be a very tough crowd to say the least.

A little kid playing the Apollo? Well it would be understandable if he were very afraid or perhaps even a little nervous. Yet not only was he not afraid, he blew them away, and he even had the crowd on their feet, for all of us who watch the show, you know that rarely ever happens. To get a standing O, you have to earn it at the Apollo!

Oh and Ben won!

Funny, he was not invited back, hmmm.....

"Man, it is by far one of the best places I have ever played, what an atmosphere, when you go to Daytona, do not miss this place. Jeff Fedora who heads up the Daytona Blues Society is great, and is a wicked player in his own right.

Just got back from our little annual community street festival. A few blocks of a street blocked off for half a day and all kinds of booths setup, etc. There's a small stage and the first performers were these young guys. Reading their bass drum it said 'BEN ROBINSON BAND'. They tore right into a blues song and I about dropped my soda. This kid was tearing it up on guitar the leads were blistering. At the end, they said there was a song they wanted to play that required the drummer to play 2 parts and the guitarist to play 3 parts.... they were going to give it a shot.... I knew it right away... Allman Brothers Whipping Post. Amazing.

If you hear these guys are playing somewhere locally in your area... check'em out. Here I went for the kettle corn and marine dog training demonstration and by chance I end up listening to an amazing live performance and scoring 5 CDs for $5 at a book sale that was also happening there. (I scored 3 Gaswirt Yes remasters, 1 Rush remaster and
a Philips digital classics Beethoven (Claudio Arrau) made in France PDO. A good day! :)

Concert Review: Blues Bash Rocks Mountain Winery

The day started off warm and only got hotter, but the glaring sun and the warm air couldn't even begin to compare with the smokin' guitars on stage.
From the opening notes of Blackthorne Murray (led by Robb Bower, our host for the day), to the last note of Alan Iglesias and Crossfire, we were treated to fine performances by all.

Besides Robb (who really put on a terrific event), the star of the show was Ben Robinson. I say that without the least bit of hesitation. Ben has the composure and phrasing of a seasoned professional, the exuberance of youth, and a passion for music that's apparent in every bright, shiny note. Ben is well on his way to becoming the new great blues rocker of tomorrow. You can count on it.

A musician who was in the audience listening to an impromptu performance by Ben Robinson was moved to make that statement, and friends, I will gush just like a fan myself and say that hearing Ben live for the first time in more than a few years was one of those times when you know you are blessed to be a part of something so very, very special.

No brooding, angry, attitude-laden wannabe, Ben Robinson is a young man in love. The object of Ben’s love, his favorite Fender Stratocaster, responds to Ben's musical affection and touch in a manner reminiscent of the relationship between a certain Mr. King and his famed “Lucille.”

I see now why Billy Gibbons reacted to Ben in the way that he did. Ben is one of THOSE guys, the ones that only come around once or twice in a lifetime.

Let me make something very clear here: no matter who you know, no matter who you have seen, they are not Ben Robinson. This guy is THE next guitar god.
